In human cervical carcinoma (HeLa) cells lincRNA-p21 was shown to be negatively regulated by the RNA binding protein Hu antigen R (HuR) and, only when HuRs levels decrease, the lncRNA is able to stabilize and interact with its mRNA-targets: mainly CTNNB1 and JUNB. The imperfect base-pairing between lincRNA-p21 at sites in the coding and untranslated regions of its targets, triggers the association of these mRNAs with the translational repressors RCK and FMRP leading to attenuation of their translation [109]. This evidence concerns the gene CDKN1A and cervical carcinoma.
