Over the last 25 years, several papers have been published demonstrating a marked induction of HO-1 in neurons and glial cells from AD brain and this phenomenon has been explained as an attempt of the neural tissue to react against oxidant/inflammatory damage by increasing the production of neuroprotectants, such as CO and BR (Schipper et al., 2006; Hettiarachchi et al., 2017; Nitti et al., 2018). The gene discussed is HMOX1; the disease is Alzheimer disease.
