Ceftriaxone (Cef), a β-lactam antibiotic, has been reported to increase GLT-1 expression significantly, and this increase can provide neuroprotection in animal models of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (Rothstein et al., 2005), Parkinson’s disease (Hsu et al., 2015; Hsieh et al., 2017), brain ischemic preconditioning (Chu et al., 2007; Harvey et al., 2011; Hu et al., 2015; Krzyzanowska et al., 2017), pain (Hu et al., 2010), and seizure (Soni et al., 2015; Hussein et al., 2016). The gene discussed is SLC1A2; the disease is amyotrophic lateral sclerosis.
