Prior studies have shown that ectopic expression of WWOX through various methods such as adenovirus-delivered WWOX cDNA (Ad-WWOX) or treatment with the DNA methyltransferase inhibitor,, 5-aza-2′-deoxycytidine to activate the endogenous WWOX gene results in decreased cell growth and viability in human breast and lung cancer-derived cells in vitro and in vivo [46, 47].
