The colocalization and co-expression of ACE2 and TMPRSS2 in the glomerulus and their strong correlation in this compartment may underlie the recent clinical observation of an emerging SARS-CoV-2–associated nephropathy (COVAN) which is characterized by a collapsing form of glomerulosclerosis not unlike HIV-associated nephropathy [45].
