The insertion–deletion variant in the 3′UTR of the TNFSF13B gene (encoding BAFF) associated with increased risk of autoimmune diseases creates an APA site that generates a shorter transcript (BAFF-var mRNA) that is more efficiently translated and hence produces higher levels of sBAFF (13, 14) (Figure 1A).
