Since (i) both the risk factors for severe COVID-19 (e.g., obesity, diabetes, age) and the SARS-CoV-2 virus harness similar pro-inflammatory mechanisms and (ii) GLP-1 signaling is anti-inflammatory and has demonstrable benefits in patients with underlying conditions (118), it stands to reason that GLP-1 signaling should directly oppose the inflammatory mechanisms activated in COVID-19. This evidence concerns the gene GLP1R and COVID-19.
