VEGFA and neoplasm: The understanding of the intricate biochemical and physiological processes by which HIF-1/2 sense tumor oxygen levels and regulate genes involved in metabolism (such as the glucose transporters), pH regulation (such as monocarboxylate transporters, MCTs; and carbonic anhydrases, CAs), and angiogenesis (vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF)) led to the award of the 2019 medicine Nobel prize to three scientists who contributed significantly to the field, Kaelin [5], Ratcliffe [6], and Semenza [7,8].
