More recently, vimentin (a peptide which is involved in intercellular interactions and functioning of the immune system, involved in the pathogenesis of inflammation and many autoimmune diseases) [26], has been detected inside the giant multinucleated cells of sarcoid granulomas, as well as associated with specific T-cells and antibodies to vimentin in representatives of the HLA-DRB1*0301 genotype [27,28]. Here, HLA-DRB1 is linked to autoimmune disease.
