Despite the promising results of syndecan-1 and sE-selectin, endocan, a proteoglycan secreted by the vascular endothelium in septic patients, was not associated with RH-PAT or sepsis.(50-53) As pneumonia was underrepresented in our study population and endocan is mainly produced by the kidney and lung in the presence of inflammatory mediators, our results may have been underpowered, and such an association was not identified. The gene discussed is ESM1; the disease is Sepsis.
