An article published by Guo and colleagues showed that COVID-19 patients with diabetes but without other comorbidities were at an independently high risk of severe pneumonia, uncontrolled inflammatory response, and hypercoagulable state.11 Serum D-dimer, interleukin (IL)-6, C-reactive protein (CRP), and ferritin were significantly higher in patients with diabetes mellitus showing susceptibility to rapid deterioration in COVID-19. This evidence concerns the gene CRP and susceptibility to pneumonia measurement.
