Sunitinib, another antiangiogenic VEGFR inhibitor considered a standard of care in the decade before 2018, was the control in each of the phase 3 clinical trials leading to the approvals.4,5,6 As is reflected in the National Comprehensive Cancer Network treatment guidelines released in August 2019, nivolumab-ipilimumab and pembrolizumab-axitinib have replaced sunitinib as favored first-line therapies for advanced RCC, but there is no consensus on which is preferred.5,7,8,9.
