During the early stages of other types of respiratory infections, increased ROS activates the nuclear factor erythroid 2-related factor 2 (NFE2L2 commonly called Nrf2) transcriptional regulator to induce antioxidant genes such as SOD3 and catalase to protect against the ROS-induced proinflammatory gene expression and subsequent cytokine storm. The gene discussed is NFE2L2; the disease is respiratory tract infectious disorder.
