To address whether the genes enriched in macrophage subsets in murine atherosclerotic aortas could be detected in human lesions, we performed a literature screen, which revealed that the genes enriched in inflammatory macrophages (Tnf-α, Tnfsf9, Ccl3, Tlr2, Egr1, and Ccl2), Res-like macrophages (Cxcl4, Lyve1, Txnip, and Gas6), and TREM2hi macrophages (Trem2 and Spp1) were detected in lesional macrophages isolated from carotid artery tissue samples from patients with high-grade carotid artery stenosis (> 70%) (6, 11–15). Here, TLR2 is linked to coronary atherosclerosis measurement.
