The dysregulation of nascent protein folding within the ER, or dysregulation of protein transport from the ER to the GN, is characteristic of many protein folding diseases, including Cystic Fibrosis (CF), Alpha-1 Antitrypsin Deficiency, Alzheimer’s Disease, Parkinson’s Disease, Type 2 Diabetes (T2D), certain cancers, and others (Bartoszewski et al., 2008; Wang and Kaufman, 2012). The gene discussed is PSMA6; the disease is type 2 diabetes mellitus.
