Genes PKD1 (The European Polycystic Kidney Disease Consortium, 1994) and PKD2 (Mochizuki et al., 1996) encode polycystin 1 (PC1) and polycystin 2 (PC2), respectively, that are responsible for ADPKD; yet, the biological function of polycystins remains elusive and controversial (Douguet et al., 2019). This evidence concerns the gene PKD2 and autosomal dominant polycystic kidney disease.
