In skin cancer, the active form of phospho-AKT (pAKT) was overexpressed in 22 (54%) of 41 benign nevi and 112 (71.3%) of 157 primary melanoma tumors compared to normal adjacent tissue, resulting in a reciprocal five-year survival rate in human metastatic melanoma [21,22]. The gene discussed is AKT1; the disease is melanoma.
