IL6 and acute respiratory distress syndrome: Patients who died from SARS-CoV-1, which was self-limited because the virus did not adapt as well to person-person spread, had high serum concentrations of proinflammatory cytokines and chemokines [interleukin-6 (IL-6), IL-8, interferon gamma-induced protein 10 (IP-10), and monocyte chemoattractant protein-1 (MCP-1)], which were associated with progression to ARDS.
