Autopsy results of hospitalized COVID-19 patients with neurologic manifestations demonstrated the hyperemic and edematous properties for the brain tissue and degenerated condition for some neurons.64 Because of the virus entry to neuroplasm via the ACE2 receptors, SARS-CoV-2 can induce neuronal death through apoptosis, and in rare cases, autophagy might happen.67 It is well studied that ACE2 is expressed by brain cells (Figure 3) particularly in the brain stem and in regions that are responsible for the regulation of cardiovascular function.
