In rats, i.p. administration of bromelain prevents intra-abdominal adhesions [371], and when combined with N-acetyl cysteine (NAC, a mucolytic agent also used clinically) to treat rats with pseudomyxoma peritonei, a malignancy in which excessive mucin secreted by tumour cells accumulates in the peritoneal cavity, mucin disintegration was observed without any toxicity [370]. Here, MUC5AC is linked to pseudomyxoma peritonei.
