In rodent malaria, most splenic monocytes differentiate into inflammatory monocytes (iMOs, CD11b+F4/80+CD11c−MHC II−), and monocyte-derived dendritic cells (MO-DCs, CD11b+F4/80+CD11c+MHC II+)44 and the differentiated cells are the main source of active caspase-1 and IL-1β at 8 days post infection with Pc18. Here, CASP1 is linked to infection.
