The hallmark pathologies of AD are the accumulation of intracellular neurofibrillary tangles of the protein tau and extracellular plaque deposits of the Aβ peptide, the deposition of which could be attributed to the dysfunction of certain transporter molecules such as P-glycoprotein or the changes in expression levels of relevant receptor proteins such as TLRs.31,32.
