Camk2a encodes a calcium/calmodulin-dependent protein kinase subunit that plays a key role in synaptic plasticity, AMPA receptor transmission, LTP, and long-term memory formation, and its dysfunction underlies neuropsychiatric disorders such as drug addiction, schizophrenia, depression, epilepsy, and multiple neurodevelopmental disorders, perhaps through maladaptations in glutamate signaling and neuroplasticity [38,39].
