In experimental RP, early stabilization of the labile α subunit of HIF-1 (HIF-1α) with dimethyloxalylglycine (DMOG), an inhibitor of prolyl hydroxylases that avoids the hydroxylation of HIF-1α and its consequent degradation [7], prevents photoreceptor cell death, neuroinflammation and oxidant responses, suggesting a link between HIF-1 levels and retinal degeneration [5,6,8]. This evidence concerns the gene HIF1A and retinal degeneration.
