Among the genes more consistently down-regulated in both cell lines by B4GALNT2 is CD44. Considering the reported function of CD44 as a sLex carrier [35], and the role of fucosylated CD44 in CRC progression [34], current data provide a new potential mechanism through which B4GALNT2 hinders FUT6-mediated cancer progression; not only through the well documented competition for the carbohydrate substrate acceptor, but also through the down-regulation of one of the preferred sLex carriers. The gene discussed is FUT6; the disease is colorectal carcinoma.
