Initialization of thromboinflammation in ischemic stroke can be explained by the elevated platelet expression of the CD40 ligand (CD40L) in activated platelets, which, by triggering the expression of adhesive molecules, such as P-selectin, E-selectin, and ICAM-1, leads to formation of platelet-leukocyte aggregates [20, 21]. This evidence concerns the gene ICAM1 and ischemic stroke.
