Consistent with the previous observations, the decreased expression level of FBW7 has been demonstrated in other types of cancer, including hepatocellular carcinoma [44], colorectal cancer [45], esophageal squamous cell carcinoma [46], etc. Although many studies strongly support the protective role of FBW7 in cancer, there is still controversy whether targeting FBW7 with a drug promotes or inhibits cancer, since an impairment of FBW7 function in cancer cells was shown to induce chemoresistance by stabilizing oncoproteins [47]. The gene discussed is FBXW7; the disease is esophageal squamous cell carcinoma.
