Although both forms of diabetes have hyperglycemia as a key metabolic abnormality [13,14,15], in type 1 DM insulin deficiency is the primary cause of hyperglycemia while in type 2 DM hyperglycemia results from insulin resistance, impaired insulin signaling, and, in some individuals, impaired insulin secretion is also a contributing factor [15,16]. The gene discussed is INS; the disease is Insulin resistance.
