ACE2 and COVID-19: Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) is caused by severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2), an enveloped, positive sense, single-stranded RNA virus.1 SARS-CoV-2 shares the same genus as the Middle East respiratory syndrome-related coronavirus and the same virus species as severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus (SARS-CoV).1 SARS-CoV-2 enters host cells by binding to functional receptor angiotensin-converting enzyme 2 (ACE2), an enzyme otherwise well-known for its role in regulating the renin–angiotensin system.
