C9orf72 and amyotrophic lateral sclerosis: Following our assessment of RNA secondary structures, we found that alternative secondary structures within those G-rich regions folded into compete with RG4 formation in the transcriptome (Fig. 1i, j), agreeing with the previous discoveries on a single example of G4C2 repeats in amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS)-associated gene C9ORF72 [41].
