Genome-wide association studies (GWAS) in large cohorts indicate that polymorphisms in two genes, patatin-like phospholipase domain–containing 3 (PNPLA3) and transmembrane 6 superfamily member 2 (TM6SF2), are strongly associated with development of NAFLD and NASH [7,8]. Here, TM6SF2 is linked to metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease.
