An in vitro study on cell cultures with different expressions of AQP1 showed that 5HMF (5-hydroxymethyl furfural) significantly reduced the migration of cells with high AQP1 expression (colon cancer cell HT-29, breast cancer cell MDA-MB-231) without causing changes in cells lacking AQP1 expression (colon cancer cell SW480) [190]. This evidence concerns the gene AQP1 and breast carcinoma.
