Increasing evidence showed that a co-shared genetic pathway partially explain the comorbidity of schizophrenia, major depressive disorder, type 2 diabetes, and metabolic syndrome (49, 50) and recent evidence supported the hypothesis that intrinsic dysfunction in central nervous system insulin signaling might represent the final common pathway of interaction between metabolic syndrome schizophrenia and mood disorders (18). The gene discussed is INS; the disease is metabolic syndrome.
