Our meta-analysis suggested that enteral lactoferrin supplementation was associated with a reduction in late-onset sepsis in VLBW and extremely ELBW infants but did not decrease the incidence of NEC stage II or III, all-cause mortality, bronchopulmonary dysplasia, retinopathy of prematurity, invasive fungal infection, intraventricular hemorrhage, and urinary tract infection in preterm infants. This evidence concerns the gene LTF and necrotizing enterocolitis.
