Though we compare the levels of cystatin C and creatinine within the PUUV-infected patients included in our study, we find similar results to the study performed by Ma et al., thereby, verifying that infection with hantaviruses (Hantaan or PUUV) leads to earlier increase of cystatin C levels than creatinine, indicating cystatin C is indeed a more sensitive kidney injury marker than creatinine. This evidence concerns the gene CST3 and infection.
