A recent study showed that fibronectin type III domain-containing 5 (FNDC5), which by proteolytic cleavage produces soluble irisin, is elevated in NAFLD [64], suggesting that FNDC5 increase in hepatocytes may be a mechanism to cushion the development of NAFLD by reducing hepatocyte steatogenesis and damage. Here, FNDC5 is linked to metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease.
