Since ANXA1 is known to be involved in maintaining blood–brain barrier (BBB) integrity, achieved through co-localization with actin microfilaments present at the tight junctions between cells, deregulation of ANXA1 can be associated with BBB leaking [94] and therefore associated with age-related neurodegeneration [95] and multiple sclerosis [94].
