After MI, the cardiac microenvironment consists of ischemic and dead cardiomyocytes which release DAMPs including cytokines and chemokines such as monocyte chemoattractant protein-1 (MCP-1/CCL2), Interleukin (IL)-1α, IL-6, C-X-C Motif Chemokine Ligand 16 (CXCL16), the macrophage-inhibitory factor (MIF) and CXCL12, which recruit leukocytes to the heart [14].
