Hepcidin is both reabsorbed by proximal tubule epithelialcells and synthesized in the distal tubule region.43 Recent studies have indicated that urine hepcidin level might be apotential biomarker for acute kidney injury.44 For example, Fufaa et al. demonstrated that urine hepcidin levelcould serve as a potential biomarker of inflammatory cell invasion in early diabeticnephropathy lesions.45 In our study, we didnot find elevated urine hepcidin levels in our patients, but we did find a positivecorrelation between urine hepcidin/Cr and NGAL/Cr levels. The gene discussed is HAMP; the disease is acute kidney injury.
