The cytokine transforming growth factor β (TGF‐β) plays a central role in the development of renal fibrosis by activating multiple downstream signaling pathways, for example, mothers against decapentaplegic homolog 3 (Smad3) and connective tissue growth factor (CTGF) pathways [5, 6]. This evidence concerns the gene TGFB1 and renal fibrosis.
