CDH1 and cancer: During the EMT process in cancer, epithelial cells lose their polarity and the cell–cell interactions (like adhesion molecules—E-cadherin and cytokeratins—tight junctions and gap junctions) to acquire a more mesenchymal phenotype, presenting increased migratory and invasiveness capacity, apoptosis resistance, and enhanced extracellular matrix (ECM) secretion (7, 8).
