NLRP3 and age-related macular degeneration: Chronic inflammation is frequently reported to associate with AMD and the activation of the NLRP3 (NACHT (neuronal apoptosis inhibitor protein, class 2 transcription activator of the MHC, heterokaryon incompatibility and telomerase-associated protein 1), NLR (nucleotide-binding domain, leucine-rich repeat-containing family), and PYD (pyrin domain)-containing protein 3) inflammasome is considered as an important mechanism in AMD pathogenesis (reviewed in [14]).
