ELN and arteriosclerosis: Based on these findings it could be speculated that microalbuminuria and a high normal range of albuminuria of > 1.5 mg/mmol reflects both arteriosclerosis (vascular function), i.e. morphological characteristics of the tunica media of large elastic arteries involving decreased elastin and higher collagen content [3], and subclinical atherosclerosis (vascular structure), which is associated with narrowing of the arterial lumen secondary to accumulating cells and lipids in the tunica intima [37].
