Western diet in mice exacerbated the dextran sodium sulfate-induced colitis and induced the overgrowth of pro-inflammatory E. coli, decreased protective bacteria like Firmicutes, decreased SCFA production and its receptor GPR43 expression in the colon, and decreased forkhead box P3 (Foxp3)+ Tregs in mesenteric lymph nodes, leading to the enhanced systemic inflammation as well as colon [40]. The gene discussed is FOXP3; the disease is colitis.
