Surprisingly, in contrast to previous studies of the role of galectin-3 in host resistance to pathogenic yeast, galectin-3 exhibited no direct antifungal activity against the mold A. fumigatus. In mice infected with A. fumigatus, galectin-3 mediated the efficient egress of neutrophils from the bloodstream to the site of infection. Here, LGALS3 is linked to infection.
