BCHE and neurodegenerative disease: Given the known importance of TG2 in neurite outgrowth (Perry et al. 1995; Mahoney et al. 2000; Tucholski et al. 2001, 2003) an important morphological determinant of neuronal cell differentiation during development and also in nerve regeneration, and the observation of TG2 upregulation in neurodegenerative diseases (Kim et al. 2002; Grosso and Mouradian 2012), our findings suggests that TG2 represents a new and highly relevant non-cholinesterase protein target for OP-binding.
