Abolishing Nlrp3 or caspase-1 expression in bone marrow–derived cells fails to protect mice against DKD, and Nlrp3-deficient mice were protected against DKD despite transplantation of WT bone marrow (16) showing that inflammation originating from renal cells and not myeloid cells can be attributed to DKD progression and deterioration. The gene discussed is CASP1; the disease is diabetic kidney disease.
