These data are supported by various immunohistochemical studies on patients, which have clearly localized uPAR overexpression to atherosclerosis: while normal arterial tissue is negative for uPAR, intensely positive stained lymphocytes, macrophages, and intimal smooth muscle cells are found in atherosclerotic lesions and atheroma’s [93, 97–101].
