Nevertheless, considering the systemic hypomethylation detected in the hyperhomocysteinemic animals, we are tempted to speculate that the up-regulation of IL6 expression observed in these animals after 12 weeks of diet when compared to the HF-fed mice (Figure 4) may result from the demethylation of the CpG islands in the promoter region of the gene encoding for this inflammatory cytokine [45,46]. The gene discussed is IL6; the disease is hydrops fetalis.
