Increased serum levels of acute-phase proteins, such as the C-reactive protein (CRP), are rare in CD, although the gliadin-dependent activation of mononuclear cells of the lamina propria mucosa causes the hyperproduction of pro-inflammatory cytokines, such as IFN-γ and IL-6 [62,63,64], which are both mediators of anemia and systemic inflammation [65,66]. The gene discussed is IFNG; the disease is anemia.
